In 2021, we obtained an in-town property in a mid-Nebraska town occupied by 2 buildings over 120 years old, with structural issues, asbestos material, and site constraints, such as a tall established tree with bird nests we wished to preserve.
With difficulty finding an architect to help redevelop and redesign the property, we searched for and asked many probing & detailed questions of contractors about the processes and procedures involved to either renovate the old structures or to build a replacement home.
Without an architect, what we needed was a design-build general contractor. Being over 500 miles away, we also needed project coordinators to follow up with details, scheduling and implementation.
We found Elev 8, a husband & wife team with exterior and interior design-build experience. They and their crew focused on all aspects of site work, demolition, utility extensions, excavation, foundation install, framing, all utility support functions, exterior cladding, roofing, and interior finish upgrades, painting inside & out, final regrading, concrete work, drainage, irrigation, and plant material installations.
Foremost, they were super personable and patient in answering all our questions from start to finish. They offered or swayed us on other design options, finishes, fixtures, and colors to the point we were comfortable with the choices and selections. They even accommodated our requests to incorporate some of the design elements, features and themes from the old 1900 home.
We are super happy with the final product with a modern farmhouse look on the interior and exterior. It resulted in a visual improvement for the corner lot.
We learned a lot from our communications and design meetings with them including the meticulous details and attention needed to evaluate and select all the design elements, materials, features, colors, the options and price differences thereof.
We did receive an original estimate and after a year of construction efforts, the change orders were within a 20% difference of initial price figure. It was close to budget but some of the price increases were the result of our selecting upgraded finishes later in the process.
Elev 8 would be the team to select if wanting top notch quality construction and efforts with a ‘Git-R done’ mentality (from a Larry the Cable Guy quote).
